Network card keeps dropping off
Every 10-45 minutes it just says "LINKSYS 100Tx has lost cable connection" and it comes back.. it is driving nuts..
Also it coincides with my MSN messenger just dropping off and asking me to relogin. That NIC card isn't the one I use for Internet access.

Huh?
Let me see if I got this right. You loose your internet connection for a few moments and the card that looses the connection isn't even being used? Or is it that you're using the that one for something else? I'm a little confused. Do you have a home network?

Card 1 - INTERNET
The morons that setup our broadband line didn't drop it in the back room, else.. I'd have this on a router... because of Budget reasons I haven't called someone to move the line, cheapest alternative is to use THIS computer as a router/gateway. Card 2 - Linksys - LOCAL card - This is running IPX/SPX and TCPIP .. routes all calls for internet stuff to card 1. Even with activity the card drops periodically.. I've disabled it's AUTODETECT and its Sleep Mode garbage.

Networking drives me fucking nuts because I know little to nothing about it. It seems to me though that if the LINKSYS is only being used to share your internet connection then it shouldn't be causing you problems. Not on that PC anyway. I had that same set up for me and my wife once but decided to get a router because it was giving me problems. I was sharing my internet connection with her computer, which worked fine until I booted into Linux. I never did figure it out, I just got a router instead. Now I have problems hosting games sometimes. Man, this shit drives me nuts. I wish I could offer more help but I suck. What can I say?
I do have a suggestion however and that's get a router. I payed 30 bucks for mine and it's been well worth it. Another thing you could try, as stupid as it sounds, is switch the role of the cards around and reconfigure it. Aside from that I'm worthless here.

For hosting games, setup your router to forward ports (if you use Windows Firewall the App. must have permissions also)
Every game has different port settings.

I've done that. I've tried everything but UT2004 just won't let me host. A certain bittorrent client won't work for me either. I've tried bypassing the routers firewall and nothing works. I can host in Cube and I've never had a problem with others. Another thing is that I can send files to my friend through IM but he can't send me any. Just for a test I tried sending a file to my wife through IM and she can't get it. We can share files on our local drives but not through IM. I don't know, but it's fucked up. I know that. I guess that's what I get for purchasing a cheap router.

Network card keeps dropping off
I have a home network cable modem w/router with two computers on it. My son and I would like to play games with and sometimes against each other while on the internet. We have two copies of JOTR, we can play one at a time on the internet but not at the same time or together. We can also play on the LAN with no problem. So, the question is "Can we play together over the internet from our home network"?

the simple answer is, yes.
What game are you playing and what kind of problem are you running into (what game, what error message, etc)? |
